In a job search, your first impression can happen before you even meet with potential employers. Take Control of your First Impression – The Resume.
We are all familiar with the saying “First Impressions can last a lifetime”. In a job search, your first impression can happen before you even meet with potential employers. How you present yourself on your resume and how you portray yourself on social media can heavily impact your success if you are in search of a new career.
Take Control of Your First Impression – Part One: Your resume is your ticket in. You want your resume to portray your skills and experience as well as a more professional you. See the tips below to see if your resume follows suit:
- The email address you provide should be a professional one. Create a professional email address that contains your first and last name (I.E yournamelastname@noemail.com). An unprofessional email address, even ones that contain letters and numbers can hinder your first impression. An email address you created years ago with a funny nickname or your pets name will not have a positive impact for you – Instead, it shows carelessness and lack of awareness.
- The format of your resume should be visually appealing and consistent. Do your research on what is the best way to format your resume – the appropriate amount of pages, which side the resume should be justified on, and where the headings should be positioned. In addition, the type and the size of the font should be consistent. Again, inconsistency will show carelessness and lack of attention to detail.
- The descriptions on your resume should be summarized and to the point. When you are adding a description to your past or current experience, be succinct. The potential employer will want to know key details however this should be done when tailoring the resume to the role. General duties and responsibilities should be kept to a few lines or bullet points. Finally, keep the most important information at the top.
Your resume is a reflection of you on paper. By giving your resume a polished look, you will leave a good impression in the eyes of staffing specialists and potential employers.

Great post Manraj! It’s crucial to keep in mind that for those resumes spanning two pages, the highlights are all summarized on the first page as most reviewers don’t make it to the second page. Keeping resume bullet points succinct and to the point will be key to one’s success.
